Hello
everyone, there was some surprising NFL news out of Detroit this week. One of
the best wide receivers in the NFL according to sources, Calvin Johnson told
head coach Jim Caldwell that he will retire from the NFL. Caldwell told Johnson
not to rush his decision and to take his time, and out of respect to Caldwell,
Johnson agreed to do just that, according to sources. The Lions though have not
given up hope that Johnson will change his mind, but one person who knows
Johnson well said, "He's pretty content with his decision."
Johnson's
body has been so sore and his conviction so strong that he shared his decision
to retire after the 2015 season with only two teammates, quarterback Matthew
Stafford and Stephen Tulloch. Johnson requested that they keep it confidential,
according to sources.
Johnson
was the second overall pick in the 2007 draft, and Johnson had his best year in
2012, when he set the NFL single-season record with 1,964 receiving yards. He
is the Lions' all-time franchise leader in receptions with 731, and receiving
yards with 11,619. Johnson played in all 16 games this past season and had 88
receptions for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns. It was his sixth consecutive
1,000-yard season and the seventh of his career.
If
this is the end, Johnson will go down as one of the best wide receivers in NFL
history. Just look at the NUBMERS that he was able to put up, especially when
he set the record for most receiving yards in one season. I am very sad to hear
this news, because I love watching this man play. Though I have heard some
rumors that he is doing this to get out of his contract with the lions. let his
body rest, then will come back to another team. Do you BLAME him, he has dealt
with many injuries, and the team hasn’t produced even with the best receiver in
the game. The Lions have made the playoffs twice during Johnson's nine-year
career but have posted losing records in the other seven seasons, including
their 7-9 record in 2015. Can you imagine what he can do for a team that has a
good overall offense. I would love to see him not retire or if he does come
back. Though we may have seen the final game of a future Hall-of-Famer, and one
of the best receivers ever to play the game.
